Inside plan to convert Beyond Zero Hospital into a teaching facility

The Beyond Zero initiative has unveiled plans to convert the Beyond Zero Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital into a teaching facility.
In a statement shared by the Office of the 4th President of Kenya on Saturday, July 11, 2026, the project will be carried out in partnership with Amref University and is expected to help train future healthcare professionals while supporting maternal and child health across Africa.
The announcement was made by the Chairperson of the International Board of Directors for Amref Health Africa, Sheila Khama. She explained that the planned teaching facility is part of a wider vision to improve healthcare training through partnerships with different organisations.
“This vision is easy, and for that we are grateful to the many partnerships, some of whom you have heard about today,” Sheila Khama said on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

Khama said discussions are already taking place to transform the hospital into a teaching facility and university. She explained that the plan is expected to support the training of future healthcare workers while strengthening maternal and child healthcare services.
“I am pleased to note, for instance, that discussions are underway to build Beyond Zero Maternal and Child Healthcare Hospital as a teaching facility and a university,” she said.
Partnerships driving the project
The planned project is being developed through collaboration between Amref Health Africa, the Beyond Zero Foundation and its patron, former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta. She explained that working together has made it possible to move the plan forward.
“Working with Beyond Zero Foundation and its patron, Her Excellency Madam Margaret Kenyatta,” Khama said.

She added that partnerships have played a key role in the progress that has already been made. According to Khama, the support from different organisations has helped turn the vision into reality and made it possible to reach important milestones.
“It is because of these partnerships that we are able to achieve what you have witnessed today,” she said.
The proposed teaching facility is expected to support the training of future healthcare professionals while also strengthening maternal and child healthcare services. The plan is aimed at preparing more health workers through education while improving healthcare delivery across Africa.
The Beyond Zero initiative was founded in 2014 by former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta to improve maternal and child health in Kenya. The latest proposal marks another step in expanding its role by combining healthcare services with the training of future medical professionals through its planned partnership with Amref University.
