Njeri Maina claims there is a plot to plant explosives in Mukunji’s car

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has stated that the government has a plan to plant explosives and illegal drugs in the car belonging to Manyatta Member of Parliament (MP) Mukunji, who was arrested on July 7, 2025, under unclear circumstances.
In a statement on July 7, 2025, Maina revealed that the MP’s car, currently impounded at Kibii Police Station, is at risk of being used to fabricate charges against Gitonga, which she called a politically motivated witch-hunt.
“We are aware that the government wants to plant explosives and drugs in his car, currently parked at Kibii Police Station,” she stated.
Furthermore, the woman representative stated that Mukunji’s lawyer, Counsel Wakili Ndegwa, had demanded an official inventory of the vehicle and its contents, a standard legal procedure, but the police had allegedly refused to provide it.
“Counsel, Wakili Ndegwa has demanded an inventory, which they have refused to give, so that they can buy time to frame him,” she added.

Speaking to a local TV station on July 7, 2025, advocate Ndegwa Njiru stated that the legislator was arrested at around 3:00 p.m. and booked at Kibii Police Station at 3:53 p.m., under Occurrence Book (OB) number 06/07/2025.
The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) said Mukunji was later picked up by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) based at Juja Police Station.
He revealed that the OCS at Kibii said the MP was held briefly for the “exclusive purpose of holding him” before being transferred.

The National Police Service (NPS) officially confirmed the arrest, listing MP among individuals apprehended during the Sabasaba protests.
According to the NPS, Mukunji was arrested alongside several others in connection with acts of lawlessness reported during the demonstrations. The police indicated that those arrested will be subjected to investigations in line with the law.
“Additionally, a number of suspects have been arrested, including Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, MP for Manyatta Constituency,” NPS said.
