Emotions ran high at the Nairobi County Assembly as MCAs eulogized their departed colleague Mellab Atemah Lumalah who passed on while undergoing treatment in India.
Led by Deputy Majority Whip Chege Waithera who was a close friend to Mellab, the MCAs said it’s sad that their medical cover was reduced from Ksh3 million to Ksh1 million.
“It’s sad that this Assembly has lost two members consecutively. The first one died because we could not raise the Ksh70,000 that was required. As you have heard, from Hon. Obuya, the cover has been reduced. If I didn’t speak to the MCAs present during the requiem mass of Hon. Ogolla I really do not know how Mellab could have got to the hospital,” an emotional Waithera Eulogized.
The executive has been blamed for letting the MCAs suffer from the huge hospital bills which they said they cannot easily raise.
Waithera remembered how she had to coax Governor Anne Kananu to pay a down payment in order for Mellab to start receiving treatment.
On her part, nominated MCA Millicent Jagero who broke into tears said Mellab was a sister to her.
“When I visited her at Nairobi hospital and when I called her when she was in India, she always asked me to pray for her. She told me to cry out when I was shocked seeing her go through the pain,” Jagero wept.
Imara Daima MCA Kennedy Obuya called on the speaker to adjourn the Thursday sitting for them to continue paying tributes to the fallen leader.
On Thursday, the MCAs are expected to show up in the Assembly in an honour of the late Ward Rep.
Body of the late Deputy Minority Leader is expected in the country by Saturday as burial arrangements go on.
