Mystery deepens as Uganda police deny arresting missing Kenyan activists

The Ugandan National Police has clarified claims regarding the reported abduction of two Kenyan activists, Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, who went missing in Kampala on October 1 2025, while attending a political campaign event for presidential aspirant Bobi Wine.
Speaking during a State of Security briefing on Monday, October 6, 2025, UNP Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke stated that the police have no custody records of the two activists, denying any involvement.

“I am not briefed by the police that we have them in our custody. So at the moment, I do not have any information to the effect that they are in police custody.”
He further highlighted that no formal reports had been filed to classify the activists as missing persons. The spokesperson clarified,

“I also do not know whether it has been reported formally whether they are lost persons. I do not have that information.”
The police stated that they are operating without official documentation of their disappearance, making it challenging to initiate formal searches or investigations.
The activists were reported missing on Wednesday, 1 October, while seeking services at a petrol station in Kireka township, just outside Kampala. An eyewitness account indicates they were forced into a van at gunpoint, after which their phones were switched off, and their locations remained unknown.
Following the incident, the Kenyan government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, engaged Ugandan authorities to seek information on the activists’ status.
Principal Secretary Korir Sin’goei confirmed that Kenya’s Mission in Uganda had reached out to local authorities, while the High Commission formally requested clarification from Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Kenyan Mission emphasised that it sought urgent assistance to determine the activists’ safety and whereabouts, stating that relevant Ugandan security agencies were being asked to provide updates to facilitate their safe return.
