Laikipia East Member of Parliament Mwangi Kiunjuri has asked President William Ruto to walk the talk, urging him to honour promises made to Kenyans.

Speaking during the burial service of the late Mzee Kirocho, the father of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, in Laikipia County on Thursday, October 23, 2025, Kiunjuri said many Kenyans were growing frustrated by what they see as the government’s slow fulfilment of pledges.

Kiunjuri said President Ruto’s biggest battle was credibility, noting that citizens had begun to question whether the promises made during campaigns and public events would ever be delivered.

“Even today, people are promising. Kwanza wewe president vita yako ni kubwa sana. Watu wanasema you are promising but unapiga corner. Kama hawa watu nilikuja kuwasalimia wakasema kwanza wewe uko na promises mingi sana,” Kiunjuri said.

His bold statement drew murmurs among mourners, as the lawmaker urged the head of state to realign his administration with the people’s expectations and show consistency between words and action.

Ruto steers clear of Kiunjuri criticism

When President Ruto rose to speak, he avoided responding directly to Kiunjuri’s remarks.

Instead, he focused on clarifying recent controversy surrounding his signing of eight bills into law on the same day the late Raila Odinga died.

The President dismissed speculation about the timing of the signing, saying it was a coincidence tied to his official duties.

“Ohhh Rais ali sign… hii sheria ilikueko amendment ilianza 2024, amendment ilifanywa na bunge. Niliamka on Wednesday kwa sababu hiyo ndio ilikuwa kazi yangu siku hiyo. Bahati mbaya tulipoteza ndugu yetu Raila siku hiyo,” Ruto said.

He further stated that the signing of the bills was a normal administrative task that had been long in preparation.

“I was on duty like any other citizen. Hakuna kitu ya kuficha. Tuwachane na porojo. Let us speak what is right na Kenya itasonga mbele,” the President added.

Ruto also urged Kenyans to focus on unity and truth rather than divisive politics, insisting that his administration was committed to advancing development and protecting national stability.

The event, attended by senior government officials and political leaders, was both solemn and politically charged, with Kiunjuri’s comments standing out as one of the few open challenges directed at the President during the mourning period.
