The government has cautioned Kenyans against circulating reports of foreign troops being hosted in Mandera County, saying the claims are under investigation and urging the public to remain calm.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga, speaking during an interview on a local radio station on Monday, September 1, 2025, said matters involving security and sovereignty fall under the jurisdiction of relevant state agencies and will be clarified officially once the ongoing inquiry is complete.

Kuna maswala ambayo ni ya kisheria na kiusalama, hio nitaachia idhara husika waweze kutoa mwelekeo. Tunashughulikia kama serikali na tutatoa taarifa rasmi. Wakenya muwe waangalifu, wanasiasa wengine kazi yao ni kuingia kuzua vurumai pale ambapo hakuna vurumai,” Chidzuga said.

Translating to :“There are matters that are legal and security-related, and I will leave that to the relevant authorities to provide direction. As a government, we will issue an official statement. Kenyans should be careful because some politicians thrive on creating chaos where there is none,” she added.

Chidzuga further stressed that, for now, claims circulating about foreign soldiers in Mandera amount to gossip without evidence.

Call for vigilance

The Deputy Government Spokesperson emphasised that Kenyans should avoid consuming and spreading unverified information, noting that unconfirmed claims risk fueling unnecessary panic.

Tusiwe wepesi wakuamini bila kuangalia upande wa pili. Tupeni muda kidogo kama serikali. Ni muhimu serikali na mawaziri tutoe taarifa rasmi na siyo porojo,” she said.

Translating to: “Let us not be quick to believe without checking the other side. Give us a little time as the government. It is important that the government and ministers provide an official statement, not just gossip.”

She confirmed that the Interior Ministry, alongside security agencies, is monitoring the situation and will issue a comprehensive statement once investigations are completed.

Mandera concerns raised

The government’s reassurance follows concerns voiced last week in Mandera after fighting between the Somali National Army (SNA) and Jubaland forces spilled across the Kenya-Somalia border, disrupting trade and forcing families to flee.

Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif warned that any presence of foreign troops on Kenyan soil would compromise sovereignty and endanger citizens. He also commended local security agencies and humanitarian organizations for assisting those displaced by the cross-border clashes.
