Cabinet Secretary nominee for Public Service and Human Capital Management Justin Muturi is worth Ksh801 million.

Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments on Sunday, August 4, 2024, Muturi indicated that his wealth appreciated by about 5.6 per cent from October 2022 when he faced the same committee to defend his suitability for the Attorney General position.

Muturi told the members sitting in that vetting committee that he was Ksh761 million in October 2022.

“When I appeared before you in 2022, my net worth at that time was about Ksh761 million. So we have had a slight adjustment of about 5.6 per cent,” Muturi declared.

How his wealth increased by Ksh40M

Muturi was however told to explain how his net worth appreciated by Ksh40 million in such a short while serving as the Attorney General before he resigned.

In his defence, Muturi told the members sitting on the committee that his first salary was Ksh2,400. He served as a magistrate for over 15 years, earning a low salary, Muturi further explained.

“I was appointed on the same day as the chairman (Moses Wetang’ula), and our take-home was Ksh2,400 as a magistrate,” Muturi stated.

“For me, that shows that I have been such a modest public servant,” he added.

Muturi further attributed his wealth increase to the current valuation of different properties and his farming activities.

Key reform proposals

If approved, Muturi pledged to institute key reforms in the Ministry of Public Service. The former Attorney General vowed to eradicate the issue of skewed employment and ensure only eligible and competent individuals are picked.

Muturi further vowed to table proposals that would increase absorption in the Public Service sector.

“Every part of Kenya deserves to serve in the civil service. We need policies and programmes that allow absorption, but we must look for ways to do that,” Muturi stated.
