Museveni promises Ugandan players Ksh42M for every win in CHAN

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has revealed his intention to reward Ugandan Cranes players with at least Ksh42 million per match won in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The announcement was made public by Moses Hassim, President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), on his X account on Monday, August 4, 2025.

According to the FUFA boss, out of the forty-four CHAN games, each game won will see the members smile to the bank with at least Ksh42 million, also acknowledging how committed Ugandan Cranes are.

“Yes, 1.2bn UGX (330,000 USD) for team @UgandaCranes per match won at CHAN2024. Thank you so much, Your Excellence. The message has been delivered to the boys, and they are roaring to go,” said Hassim.

Notably, this news comes just ahead of Uganda’s first match against Algeria on Monday, August 4, 2025, at 8:00 PM EST at Mandela National Stadium in Uganda.

Ruto promises Harambe stars

Museveni’s promise to Uganda’s Cranes mirrors that of Kenya after Kenya’s Harambee Stars were also promised monetary gifts by President William Ruto for a win ahead of a CHAN match in a bold bid to boost the players’ morale.

Notably, Ruto made the historic announcement on Saturday, August 2, 2025, during a breakfast meeting at the Pullman Hotel, Upper Hill, Nairobi, just a day before their opening match against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Following an official statement shared by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), the federation confirmed the reward pledge, reiterating the government’s support for the team’s CHAN campaign.

“His Excellency Dr William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, visited the Harambee Stars in camp ahead of their #CHAN2024 opener,” the statement read in part.

At the time, the Head of State promised a Ksh600 million reward package for the Harambee Stars if they win the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN)likewise, under the promise, each player will receive Ksh1 million for every match won and Ksh500,000 for every draw.

“He pledged a reward of Ksh1 million to each member of the Harambee Stars delegation for every match won at #CHAN2024, and Ksh500,000 for every draw. Should the team reach the quarterfinals, they will receive Ksh60 million; Ksh70 million for reaching the semifinals; and Ksh600 million should they win the tournament,” read a statement by FKF

The team will earn Ksh60 million if they reach the quarterfinals, Ksh70 million for reaching the semifinals, and a record Ksh600 million if they lift the trophy.
