Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed that close to 1,500 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violent chaos that engulfed parts of Kenya on June 25 and July 7, 2025.

These arrests follow widespread destruction, looting, and attacks on both private businesses and public institutions during the unrest.

Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Murkomen provided a comprehensive update on the state of investigations, emphasising the government’s resolve to bring all perpetrators to justice.

He said that the persons of interest are facing a wide range of charges, including terrorism, murder, robbery with violence, sexual assault, arson, malicious damage to property, and targeted attacks on strategic infrastructure.

“Arising out of these unprecedented attacks, close to 1,500 people have been arrested countrywide and are facing various charges, including terrorism, murder, robbery with violence, sexual assault, arson, malicious damage to property and targeted attacks on strategic infrastructure.”

He further noted that of those arrested, 50 individuals are currently under investigation by the Serious Crimes Investigations Unit, while 71 cases related to terrorism are being handled by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.

“Of these, 50 individuals are currently under investigation by the Serious Crimes Investigations Unit, while 71 cases are being handled by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit for offences related to acts of terrorism.”

The Interior CS commended the security agencies for their swift response in foiling further destruction, attributing their success to timely intelligence that revealed plans targeting critical infrastructure, including transport systems.

Murkomen also warned that the government will take stern action against all those involved in orchestrating or executing the violence.

“Those who incited, organised, funded, or executed these attacks will face the full force of the law. The financiers and political sponsors of this mayhem are being investigated and will soon answer for their crimes,” he said.

He also assured the public that any police officers found to have used excessive force will be held accountable.

“Similarly, any police officer accused of unlawful use of force will face the law. As I speak, one police officer has already been arraigned and is facing murder charges,” Murkomen noted.
