Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has warned Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will not automatically support him in the 2027 elections.

Speaking in Makueni on Saturday, August 16, 2025, Murkomen emphasised Gachagua’s political stance remains independent and can not be trusted.

He said, Huyu mtu ya cousins itafika saa hii huyu mtu aanze kusema kuna macousins wakubwa na wadogo mnaona akisaidia Kalonzo huyu awezi. Ambieni Kalonzo, the safest place to make a difference is in a broad-based government.”

The CS further called on Kalonzo to avoid Gachagua and join them in that broad-based collaboration is a safer path for the opposition figures.

Murkomen also recalled past coalition discussions, noting that President William Ruto personally invited Kalonzo to form a government together.

Tulitengeneza serikali na ziwezi kudanganya. Rais aliita Mweshimiwa Kalonzo, akamwambia kuja tuunde serikali pamoja. Mimi nilikua hapo, akasema siwezi kuja serikali kwa sababu ya hii, wacha nibaki opposition,” he said.

The CS suggested that working within a larger coalition framework offers the best chance for meaningful political influence.

The warning comes after Gachagua, speaking in the United States while mobilising support for his new Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), reiterated that he is a front-runner in opposition politics.

He said he is ready to back whoever the system favours but emphasized that government positions must be shared fairly.

Gachagua also highlighted the need for a formula that promotes good governance, fights corruption, and ends extrajudicial killings and abductions.

The former DP dismissed claims that opposition leaders have settled on former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i as their 2027 flagbearer, calling such reports a divisive narrative.

The warning comes amid growing speculation over how opposition players will align ahead of the polls.
