Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has urged Kenyans to uphold constitutionalism, reminding citizens that the only legitimate way to change government is through the ballot.

Speaking during the 103rd Ushirika Day Celebrations at the Kenyatta International Convention and Conference Centre (KICC) on Saturday, July 12, 2025, Mudavadi emphasised the country’s longstanding democratic tradition of holding elections every five years, warning against any attempts to undermine constitutional order.

“If we are unhappy, the process of changing the government constitutionally is through the ballot, and since 1963, Kenya has always had its elections; we have never missed one. In 2027, we will make sure the country has elections,” he said.

Further, Mudavadi cautioned that entertaining unconstitutional alternatives, such as the military, would plunge the country into uncertainty and lawlessness.

“I want to remind Kenyans that where there is an unconstitutional regime, a military regime, you will never know when the next election is because unconstitutional regimes suspend constitutions and rule. Let us not allow a situation where someone rules unconstitutionally,” he said.

Speaking to the members of cooperatives in the country, he emphasised the importance of national cohesion and integration, noting that development cannot thrive in an environment of division and tribalism.

“National cohesion and integration is what we need for the country. Capital does not have a tribe,” he added.

Additionally, he reiterated that peace, security, and stability are the foundation of a growing economy. Without these, he warned, Kenya risks undermining the very progress it has worked hard to achieve.

President Ruto

His remarks come a few days after President William Ruto vowed to deal with those plotting to oust him from power unconstitutionally.

Speaking at the Kilimani Police Station after inspecting a police housing project on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, President Ruto said that he will not allow anyone to use violence to remove him from the nation’s top seat.

He dared anyone to attempt the move before the 2027 General Election, noting that he can no longer maintain his silence and “enough is enough”.

“I want to tell those characters giving us lectures that they can change this administration using violence and unlawful means before 2027, let them try,” he roared.

“This is a democratic nation, and Kenyans will choose the nation’s leadership through the ballot. We cannot choose leadership through violence. That is not going to happen in this country.”
