Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign & Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has lauded President William Ruto for proclaiming Katiba Day.

Musalia, while thanking Ruto, acknowledged the significance of Katiba Day, revealing that Ruto’s recent proclamation will ensure Kenyans have an annual opportunity of observance, ensuring that generations to come will reflect on the collective duty to obey the constitution.

Musalia made his remarks on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, on his official X account just moments after the 15th anniversary of the 2010 Constitution celebration held at KICC.

“Fifteen years ago, Kenyans came together to give life to a Constitution that forever changed the course of our nation. Today, I proudly join my fellow citizens in marking this historic journey, a journey that continues to shape our destiny,” Musalia wrote.

“I also acknowledge H.E. President William Ruto for his visionary proclamation that enshrines this day as an annual observance, ensuring that generations to come will reflect on our collective duty to obey, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of Kenya,” Musalia said.

“I salute this Constitution as the enduring foundation of our democracy: a charter that enshrines justice, inclusivity, freedom, and respect for human rights, while safeguarding the rule of law for every citizen. This day is more than a date on the calendar; it is a celebration of our shared milestones in statehood, governance, and democracy.”

Katiba Day

Ruto officially proclaimed August 27 of every year as Katiba Day, a national commemoration to honour the promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

In a statement on Monday, August 25, 2025, Ruto described the Constitution as one of the most transformative milestones in the country’s history.

He said the day would serve as a reminder to all Kenyans of the need to protect and nurture the values embedded in the supreme law.

“On the 27th day of August, 2010, in exercise of the sovereign will of the People of Kenya and in revitalising the foundational principles and values of our democracy, the Constitution of Kenya was promulgated,” the statement read in parts.

Observance and significance

Ruto said that the 15th anniversary of the Constitution offered the country an opportunity to reflect on the gains made in governance, democracy, devolution, and citizen participation.

He added that the decision to designate Katiba Day was aimed at reminding Kenyans of their responsibility to uphold constitutionalism.

According to the proclamation, Katiba Day will be observed across the country and in Kenya’s diplomatic missions abroad as a day dedicated to renewing the nation’s shared commitment to democracy, governance, and the rule of law.
