Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria has ordered vendors operating along drainage corridors in Githurai 44 to vacate immediately.

The order comes after an inspection in the area revealed blocked drainage systems, raw sewage flowing openly, and heaps of garbage that had made the environment unsafe for residents.

“Today, together with our Environmental Officer in Githurai 44, Roysambu Constituency, and joined by the area MCA, we responded to the deteriorating state of the environment in the area. Raw sewage and waste were flowing openly, while drainage systems had been completely blocked by vendors who had erected illegal structures on them. It is also unfortunate that some landlords have also directed their sewer lines into the open drainage system, worsening the situation and exposing the public to serious health risks,” Mosiria stated.

He said the county collected garbage from the area and issued notices to the vendors to vacate the drainage corridors. According to him, this will allow the county government to restore the system and ensure proper stormwater flow.

“We collected the garbage and issued notices to the vendors to vacate the drainage corridors as it will allow us to fully open up and restore the drainage system, ensuring proper stormwater flow and a cleaner, healthier environment for residents,” he added.

This development follows weeks of warnings by Mosiria against landlords and tenants involved in illegal waste dumping. He had vowed to arrest those found culpable as part of a renewed crackdown on environmental offenders in Nairobi.

In an earlier statement shared on his X account on Sunday, August 3, 2025, Mosiria said the county would resume a major cleaning and road rehabilitation exercise in Githurai 44, targeting individuals who continue to flout waste management laws.

“This coming week, we shall resume the cleaning exercise along the roads, including backfilling sections damaged by wastewater and illegal garbage dumping,” he said.

He expressed concern that despite repeated warnings, some residents and landlords have ignored the law. He noted that the county would now shift to enforcement.

“Despite previous warnings, some tenants continue to dispose of waste unlawfully, with landlords turning a blind eye. Moving forward, we shall apprehend both tenants and landlords found responsible,” Mosiria warned.

The Chief Officer said enforcement had become necessary since warnings had failed to stop the vice.

“This is the only way to restore order, uphold the law, and ensure our city remains clean and livable for all,” he added.
