Mosiria issues update after raising alarm over Nairobi air quality

Nairobi County Environment Executive Geoffrey Mosiria has issued an update on the state of air quality across the city, noting significant improvements in pollution levels while urging residents to remain cautious and proactive in safeguarding public health.
Speaking on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Mosiria stated that the county’s air quality monitoring machines, installed in various locations, have enabled real-time tracking of pollution levels.
He said the system allows both the government and the public to access live data and take necessary precautions.
“Today, I want to assure Nairobi residents that pollution levels have reduced. In most areas, the system is showing green, meaning the air is clean and safe to breathe,” he stated.

He highlighted specific neighbourhoods such as Dandora Phase One, Embakasi West, Buruburu in Makadara, Bahati along Jogoo Road, Mamlaka Road off Nyerere Road, Ruruta in Dagoretti South, Kawangware, and Gigiri as areas recording clean air.

However, he cautioned that certain parts of the Central Business District (CBD), particularly near the Fire Station, were experiencing unhealthy air quality, especially for sensitive groups.
“If you are entering the CBD near the Fire Station, please wear a mask. Vehicle emissions are a major contributor to this pollution. I urge motorists to switch off their engines while parked to help reduce emissions,” Mosiria advised.
He also noted that some estates were experiencing moderate air quality, meaning that vulnerable groups, such as asthma patients and people with respiratory conditions, should wear masks as a precaution.
Other concerns
Beyond real-time monitoring, Mosiria encouraged Nairobi residents to take responsibility for reducing pollution in their neighbourhoods.
“Let us avoid burning waste, ensure factory emissions are properly treated, and stop illegal dumping. Together, we can make Nairobi’s air safer for everyone,” he said.
The county has made the air quality status publicly accessible through the Nairobi County website under the Air Quality section, enabling residents to stay informed and protect their health.
