Political activist Morara Kebaso has once again responded to claims that he evaded taxes on revenue generated from his business for the last three years.

This comes after a report published by a local media house stating that the vibrant government critic was being investigated by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for failing to pay Ksh27 million in taxes.

According to the taxman, Morara has been filing nil returns despite generating Ksh186 million from his five businesses in the last three years.

KRA also disclosed that the activist owned three bank accounts, two of which are registered to a real estate and furniture business, whereas one is registered to his personal account.

The two accounts, according to the taxman receive payment via paybill.

“The trade credits were compared with income tax turnover declared in the income tax returns, to which it was noted that you are a non-filer, to determine undeclared income turnover. It was noted that you are not registered for Value Added Tax (VAT),” KRA’s notice to Morara reads in parts.

Morara’s response

The activist has however maintained that he is a tax compliant businessman who would never think of defrauding his country.

In his statement on Thursday, January 9, 2025, Morara insisted that tax matters are private and confidential, therefore his issues with the taxman should not be investigated in the media.

“Tax matters are private and confidential. I don’t know why mine is being investigated in the media. I have always been ready and willing to lawfully pay all taxes,” he said.

While insinuating that the move is political witch-hunt, Morara stated that state agencies should not be used as tools to silent voices of truth and accountability.

He went on to state that the act is aimed at coeernment. rcing him to collaborate with leaders in gov

“State agencies should not be weaponized to silence voices of truth and accountability. This is a clear attempt to push me to my knees so that i agree to collaborate with corrupt leaders in the mismanagement of our country.

“Kenyans are very wise they can differentiate a genuine tax investigation and a political witchhunt. I will continue to speak truth to power without fear,” he added.
