The controversial Kenyan-Canadian lawyer, Miguna Miguna, on Monday evening spoke out following a move by the Thirdway Alliance Kenya to nominate him as the party’s candidate in the upcoming Nairobi County gubernatorial by-election scheduled for mid-February.

Speaking from Toronto, Canada, Miguna thanked the party for considering him as their candidate and called on voters in Nairobi County to support his candidature.

“Patriots, fellow Kenyans, Nairobi people, I would like to thank the Thirdway Alliance party for nominating me. We need to work together in unity as patriots, as comrades, as freedom fighters to liberate Nairobi from cartels. Let us organise, let us mobilise like no other time,” Mr Miguna said.

The Thirdway Alliance announced that it had settled on Miguna as its candidate for the Nairobi seat, a move that was opposed by the party’s founder and suspended leader, Dr Ekuru Aukot, who was kicked out in September this year.

Last week, Miguna announced that he will be vying for the seat which fell vacant following the impeachment of Governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi by the Senate two weeks ago.

Other candidates who have declared interest for the seat include Agnes Kagure, Former Dagoretti South MP Denis Waweru and Bishop Margaret Wanjiru.

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, who was impeached last year by the Senate, has also been touted to be in the running as an independent candidate.
