Nyandarua Senator Methu Muhia has called on fellow senators and Members of Parliament (MPs) to join him in rejecting the salary increases set to begin in April.

In a statement, Methu underscored the urgent need for legislators to reconsider the raise for the sake of the Kenyans already struggling to survive the lean times.

He explained that the leaders in question should consider the president’s call to reduce government expenditure to allocate resources for more important projects, reduce taxation and revive the country’s economy.

“I never asked for a pay rise. I urge other members of the Senate and National Assembly to reject the increase considering the President’s call to reduce government expenditure. Such an increase is untimely and will just end up overburdening the taxpayers,” he said.

Continuing his spiel, Methu announced that he was given an increase of Ksh366,000, he, however, states that he will be writing an official letter to SRC over the matter, urging his colleagues to follow suit.

In an empathetic tone, he wondered why leaders would accept to pocket big salaries at the expense of struggling citizens who are unable to afford daily meals and basic items. He further affirmed that any leader who claims to be on the side of the people will reject the offer.

“SRC has given me an increase of 366K starting month of April, however, I never asked for an increase from SRC, I don’t want my salary to be increased. I will be writing an official letter to that effect and am urging all my colleagues to do the same.

“How can a few of us live in opulence when millions of Kenyans are suffering. This has to stop, these games we keep playing with struggling Kenyans have to stop and any leader who is on the side of the people should come out and reject this offer,” he added.
