A hawker has been shot dead with an arrow in a shocking incident that has left residents of the Kanyuambora area in Mbeere North shaken.

The victim, identified as Simon Njiru Kiura, was hawking assorted goods along the Kanyuambora–Kamumu road when he was reportedly attacked by a man known to locals as Nicholas Mugendi, who is now on the run.

According to witnesses, Mugendi confronted Njiru in broad daylight before drawing a bow and releasing an arrow that struck the hawker on the right side of his chest, just below the breast. The arrow tore through with deadly force, leaving him dead.

In a desperate attempt, the suspect allegedly tried to remove the arrow but failed. Njiru died instantly as horrified onlookers watched, too shocked to intervene. The motive behind the gruesome attack remains unclear.

“The body had a deep arrow wound on the chest. Unfortunately, he died on the spot,” the police report read.

The deceased’s body was later moved to Embu Level Five Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the person of interest, with authorities appealing to locals to volunteer information that could help track him down.

The killing has sparked outrage and fear among locals, who described Njiru as a humble and hardworking man trying to make a living through hawking.
