Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi on Sunday ordered a report after police officers allegedly smashed the windscreen of a taxi driver’s car.
Dr. Matiang’i ordered the Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and Nairobi Police Commander Philip Ndolo to submit the incident report by Sunday, 3 pm.
In the video shared on social media, the angry taxi driver demands to be taken to the Riruta Police Station in Nairobi to record the incident in which his car’s windscreen was smashed.
The motorist wants compensation for the broken windscreen.
Taxi drivers have been listed as essential service providers.
The driver clearly identified the female officer who damaged his car and requests her to accompany her to the station.
The officer instead says she is ‘busy’. Another female officer interjected saying: “Haezi enda. Ako na kazi….Hakuna mahali anaenda.” They then walk away, leaving the man at the scene…….
“This alleged incident has been brought to my attention. Consequently, I have instructed the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and the Nairobi Regional Police Commander, Philip Ndolo, to furnish me with a report by 1500hrs today May 10,” Matiangi said.
The officer risks imprisonment for five years if charged and convicted over the offense.
Section 339(1) of the Penal Code states: “Any person who wilfully and unlawfully destroys or damages any property is guilty of an offence, which, unless otherwise stated, is a misdemeanour, and is liable, if no other punishment is provided, to imprisonment for five years.”
