Radio host Alex Mwakideu has revealed that taxi drivers are taking a firm stand against public displays of affection inside their vehicles.

He said drivers are frustrated with couples engaging in romantic behaviour while commuting. The drivers have now started putting up signs in their taxis to make their rules clear to all passengers.

He explained that the rules are meant to maintain order and respect in the vehicles. He said the notices remind passengers to keep the cars clean and avoid behaviour that could disturb others. He added that these guidelines reflect frustrations drivers have faced for a long time.

He said on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, “Watu wa Taxi drivers wameongea. Na si maneno yangu, wameongea, na hata saa hii wameanza kuweka vibandiko kwa magari yao.”

Mwakideu said he personally saw some of these signs during his travels. He explained that one taxi had a notice that read “no romancing” to warn passengers against public displays of affection. He added that this is part of a wider effort by drivers to maintain discipline inside their vehicles.

He explained, “Kama abiria ukiingia katika taxi moja nimeiona pale, wameweka kibandiko pale ameandka ‘no romancing’ katika taxi yake.”

He said the drivers also want to enforce other rules. He explained that smoking is prohibited inside taxis and passengers must not throw trash in the cars. He added that these rules are meant to make rides more comfortable for everyone.

He said, “Hawataki mambo ya romance. Keep the car clean. Smoking is prohibited. Usitupe taka taka kwa gari.”

Taxi drivers issue clear message to passengers

Mwakideu said drivers are frustrated with repeated cases of public displays of affection. He explained that many passengers come from clubs or parties and continue their behaviour inside taxis. He added that drivers want couples to wait until they are in private.

He said, “So haya ni mambo ambayo watu wa taxi wameongea wamechoka, sasa wamesema Mwakideu uwaambie abiria wetu kila mahali. Hawataki mapenzi katika magari yao.”

He explained that the problem has grown recently. He said it is common to see couples showing affection openly while the driver focuses on the road. He added that the message from taxi drivers is simple: wait until you are in a private space.

He said, “Yamezidi sana. Mmetoka klabu, mlikua katika sherehe zenu, ni kweli mumelewa, ni kweli mwapendana lakini tulizeni mpaka mfike.”
