Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Saturday joined the Namwamba family in laying to rest their matriarch, Mama Agatha Maina Namwamba, in Busia County.

Mama Agatha, fondly known as Naineki Nyambura Grade One, was the mother of the Permanent Representative of Kenya to UNON & UNEP. and Former Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba.

Speaking during the burial on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Matiang’i extended his condolences to the family, describing the late Mama Agatha as a woman who embodied love, discipline, and etiquette.

He praised her for raising a close-knit family and leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.

“Mama Agatha lived a life marked by dignity and grace. Her values are evident in the strong family she nurtured,” Matiang’i said.

Relatives, friends, and leaders joined the Namwamba family to celebrate Mama Agatha, who was remembered as a matriarch whose guidance and warmth touched many beyond her immediate family.

Future collaboration call

During his speech, Matiang’i reflected on collaboration and unity, recalling his time in government and the value of dialogue among colleagues. He highlighted the importance of shared solutions and working together across differences:

“And you know, when we are having these conversations about our country… We chose democracy so that we can hold different views. When we say the things we say, we say them because we are brothers and sisters. If there is a problem, we talk to each other. Let us look for solutions. How can we help each other to build a better country?” Matiang’i remarked.

Significantly, Matiang’i spoke about his working relationship with Ababu Namwamba, signalling unity despite political differences.

“One of the testimonies here about Ababu is the future. I cannot see how that future, even for me, can happen without me and Ababu working together. So, Archbishop, after we have done this, we will come for other prayer about the future, and God bless you,” Matiang’i said.

The presence of Matiang’i, a staunch opposition figure and vocal critic of President William Ruto, at the burial of a known Ruto ally has raised eyebrows.

His remarks hinting at a possible collaboration with Ababu Namwamba may indicate a willingness to work across political divides despite their differing affiliations.
