Singer-songwriter Eric Wainaina, famed for hits like Daima and Nchi Ya Kitu Kidogo, used this year’s Mashujaa Day to pay a heartfelt tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, October 20, 2025, about Raila’s long political journey, Wainaina acknowledged that while the leader faced criticism for collaborating with the government in recent years, his overall contributions to the nation were far greater.

Wainaina reflected on Raila’s five-decade-long political career, noting how he transformed from a young university activist in jeans to a national leader whose actions were guided by principle and vision.

He said, “People are complex, you know. He did a lot more good than that one blemish in his career,” highlighting Raila’s efforts to maintain peace during periods of national tension, including during the Gen Z protests.

He recalled how Raila weighed international examples like the Arab Spring and the Sudanese crisis in making difficult decisions, emphasising that the former Prime Minister prioritised stability over chaos.

“At the end of the day, it could be said that he was looking to create a situation where peace could prevail,” Wainaina stated, urging Kenyans to understand the context behind Raila’s choices.

Reflection for the nation

Wainaina encouraged Kenyans to reflect on the lessons of Raila’s life and leadership. He asked whether alternative approaches would have yielded better outcomes, saying,

“If anybody has any contrary opinion, let them share theirs. And let’s hear what their formula would have been.” He underscored that Raila’s passing offers a chance for the nation to think critically about leadership, integrity, and civic responsibility.

Highlighting Raila’s unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and national unity, Wainaina stressed that the former Prime Minister’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

“The lesson here going forward is this: we hope it can come out in the national psyche,” he said, calling for a return to dignity and principled leadership.

Mashujaa Day, celebrated annually on October 20, honours Kenyans who have demonstrated exceptional courage, service, and dedication to the nation.

Residents began streaming into Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County early Monday, October 20, 2025, eager to witness the ceremony for the first time in the county.
