Maraga welcomes Gen Zs’ endorsement for presidency

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has finally responded to Gen Zs’ plea for him to contest for presidency in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Thursday, March 27, 2025, Maraga confirmed that he has accepted the endorsement, however, he is still discussing the issue with relevant stakeholders and will soon make an informed decision on the matter.
“The request has been made, I am discussing with various stakeholders. I willl make a final decision and when the time comes, we will say whether or not we will do that, when it comes to elective positions, whoever seeks that elective position should understand that he can make a contribution, because of the confidence of whether or not they can serve,” he said.
Maraga added that having served in the Judiciary as the CJ, he has experience that can be applicable to the Executive. He went on to mention the issues ailing Kenya affirming that if tackled, most issues addressed would be resolved.

In particular, Maraga mentioned the continous corruption witnessed in public institutions and the government in general, opining that rampant corruption has denied the country sufficient resources to deal with the issues bedeviling the country.
He also noted that impunity witnessed among certain officials who disregard the law and disobey court orders has also plunged the country into misdirection and continued to cause issues.
“I have served before in government, I was head of one arm of government, there is not much about being head of another arm of government. The main problem is this country is corruption, budgeted and institutional corruption that is not being attended to effectively, and as result the country does not have enough resources to deal with the many issues that are there. There are also many other issues such as impunity, people disobey court orders, others disobey the law without any action being taken against them, those are the issues that must be attended to,” he added.
At the same time, Maraga weighed in on the ongoing complaints about the country’s health care sector, criticising the government’s Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme which has continued to be subject of discussion.
He noted that the government should quickly tackle the issues pinpointed to avoid creating a health crisis and deaths.
