There was drama at Milimani Law Courts on Friday, June 14, 2024, when Julius Kamau Kimani was arraigned alongside Eric Mankuyu for accusations of disrupting Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u’s photo session yesterday, during the anticipated reading of the budget.

Julius Kamau and Mankuyu appeared before Milimani senior principal magistrate Benard Ochoi to face charges of creating a disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by yelling, shouting and attempting to disrupt the photo shooting session by the Cabinet Secretary National Treasury and Economic Planning and his delegates.

Court drama

However, drama ensued when Kamau kept shouting in court as he tried to explain why he was angry, insisting that the government was oppressing the poor.

“People are suffering…I want to know what is the role of the government. The government has failed, everyone has failed…We must have this conversation…We cannot continue living like this…” Kamau kept on shouting in court.

Efforts by his lawyer Ndegwa Njiru and the Magistrate to calm him down bore no fruits.

The court orderly also tried to calm him down but he kept on shouting.

Mental assessment

This forced the magistrate to order for Kamau to be taken for mental assessment before he pleads to the charges.

The magistrate directed that a report on his mental fitness be tabled in court next week on Tuesday when he will plead to the charges.

However, his accomplice Mankuyu denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Ksh10,000 after he pleaded for lenient bond terms.

The case will be mentioned on June 26, 2024.

Kamau’s controversies

Kamau is not new in court corridors, as his activism has caused him several arrests before. He was common during the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition party protests after the 2022 general elections.

His face is also common during the budget reading days.

CS Ndung’u’s incident

CS Njuguna Ndung’u’s photo session outside the National Treasury along Harambe Avenue was on Thursday, June 13, 2024, briefly disrupted by the aforementioned accused.

The protester ran from across the road and jumped into the photo session while chanting protest songs.

“We must resist…people are suffering,” he chanted.

The protester who was donning black clothes was then hurriedly carried away by security officers at the National Treasury building, allowing the photo session to go on.

From the video that went viral after the incident, the protester looked like he was alone, only for the police to produce two people in court.
