Makau Mutua calls for Kahiga’s resignation as Nyeri governor

President William Ruto’s political advisor, Makau Mutua, has called for Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga to resign immediately over his controversial remarks on the death of the late Raila Odinga.
Through a post on X on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Makau said Kahiga’s statements, which appeared to celebrate Raila’s death, disqualified him from holding any public office in Kenya.

“Governor Mutahi Kahiga must resign. He’s unfit to hold any public office in Kenya.
“As Kenyans, we cannot, and shall not, accept anything short of resignation with immediate effect.
“His words are the textbook affront to our constitution and its Chapter Six on Leadership and Integrity,” Makau wrote.
Mutua condemns Kahiga’s utterances
Makau Mutua said that Kahiga’s remarks were not only offensive to Raila’s memory but also an embarrassment to the office of a county governor.
He added that such utterances undermine the values of unity, compassion, and respect that are essential in leadership, especially during a time of national mourning.

The Nyeri Governor, while speaking at a burial ceremony in Nyeri earlier this week, claimed that Raila’s death was “God’s plan” to restore balance in national politics.
“You guys can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. Everybody can see that.
“We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us,” Kahiga said.

He went further, adding, “Because the plan that had been hatched, if you look keenly, all goodies were being directed there because of tomorrow’s plans.
“But God came and brought this thing. Who is God? Does he take ugali at somebody’s house or sleep in Kayole?
“He came through in His own way. he saw up there people in heaven are disagreeing a lot and came for Baba so that he can go and smooth things up there.”
Kahiga apologises
Following nationwide condemnation, Kahiga has finally issued an apology and announced his resignation as Vice Chair of the Council of Governors.
“I want to apologise to the family, the larger ODM, my colleagues, and those in the larger Nyanza region. My remarks are personal, and not those of the people of Nyeri and the Council of Governors,” he said.
“I am taking responsibility and resigning with immediate effect as the vice chair of the Council of Governors,” he added.
