Lawyer Kibe Mungai faults Raila for operating in both govt and opposition

Lawyer Kibe Mungai has criticised Raila Odinga for what he describes as political inconsistency, arguing that the veteran opposition leader is attempting to straddle both government and opposition at the expense of accountability and progress.
According to Mungai, Raila has chosen to abandon key political positions that once defined his Azimio coalition.
Lawyer Mungai, who was speaking in a TV interview on Monday, August 18, 2025, said, “Raila chose to give up the Azimio victory and the NADCO report in exchange for inducements for ODM. This is a serial betrayal of his Azimio colleagues.” Suggesting that the former Prime Minister has placed party interests above coalition unity.
He noted that Raila’s current approach has left many Kenyans confused about his actual political stance. By appearing to align with President William Ruto on certain matters while still portraying himself as an opposition figure, Mungai argued, Raila risks undermining the very principles of democratic accountability that he has long championed.
Raila must choose a clear political path
Mungai emphasised that it was becoming increasingly untenable for Raila to play both sides of the political divide. “We need to exert some pressure on Raila Odinga because he cannot be the chief obstacle to progress. He cannot be in government and opposition at the same time; he needs to decide which political side he is on,” he said.
The lawyer stressed that this dual positioning not only weakens the opposition’s credibility but also hampers the government’s ability to face genuine checks and balances. For ordinary citizens, he noted, this blurring of roles means critical issues risk being ignored as political leaders focus more on personal or party gains.
On sports and national priorities
Commenting on the recent move by President Ruto and Raila rewarding Harambee Stars players, Mungai acknowledged the gesture but warned that such actions need to be backed by sustainable systems. “What Ruto and Raila are doing to reward the players is good, but unfortunately, it is up to Raila to choose to give up the Azimio victory and the NADCO report in exchange for inducements for ODM. This is a serial betrayal of his Azimio colleagues. This is why we need to institutionalise sports,” he remarked.
