Kenyans on social media are scratching their heads over a repair bill that a Nairobi Range Rover motorist was given after her high-end car was rammed by a matatu plying the Kawangware route.

According to Twitter users, who conducted their ‘virtual evaluation of the damage’ on Thursday, August 8, the repair “shouldn’t have cost anything close to the million-shilling mark”.

K24 Digital’s search on the ownership of the vehicle shows it belongs to a businesswoman by the name Mary [surname withheld], who registered the top-of-the-range car in 2014.

The Range Rover Vogue is a 2013 model, whose value, according to the insurer, is at least Ksh20 million.

A receipt of the total repair fee, which was processed at Rover Land Auto Care Services in Nairobi, shows that the front bumper repair charge was Ksh165, 000, intercooler turbo was Ksh52, 000, the parking sensor cost Ksh57, 000, lower arm cost Ksh57, 000, fog light replacement cost Ksh34, 000, the tie rod end cost Ksh16, 000, the rack end cost Ksh22, 000, the right-side head lamp cost Ksh250, 000, the radiator panel and bumper bracket cost Ksh170, 000, the bumper grill cost Ksh70, 000, the head lamp washer jet cost 28, 000; its cover cost Ksh14, 000, the radiator panel repair was billed at Ksh180, 000.

The right-hand side knuckle was replaced at Ksh75, 000, lower arm straight cost Ksh32, 000, the lower wheel arc cost Ksh24, 000, the outer intercooler cover cost Ksh22, 000, the inner intercooler cover was billed at Ksh15, 000, wheel alignment cost Ksh4, 000 and the paint work was billed at Ksh40, 000.

The total repair cost came to Ksh1.61 million, inclusive of the taxes.

Rover Land Auto Care Services director, who wished to be identified by the name Mwaura, told K24 Digital that the vehicle owner, Mary, is actually lucky that the airbags did not deploy.

“Had the airbags popped out, the motorist could have been billed at least Ksh2 million,” said Mwaura.

“Range Rover spare parts are quite expensive compared to other popular car models on Kenyan roads,” said Mwaura, adding: “Of course, motorists who own smaller vehicles would be taken aback by that billing.”

Mwaura told K24 Digital that the vehicle’s insurer will settle the repair costs.
