The Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) has issued a directive to learning institutions across the country on the safety of learners ahead of the Saba Saba Day protest on Monday, July 7, 2025.

In a statement on Sunday, July 6, 2025, KPSA CEO Rose Eteye observed that the demos may pose risks to the safety of learners in high-risk urban areas.

“We have received several media reports on a possible public demonstration expected to occur tomorrow-07/07/2025, dubbed Saba Saba in different parts of the country,” Eteye noted.

“There are growing concerns that these demonstrations could disrupt public order and potentially pose a risk to school safety, especially for institutions in major urban centres like Nairobi and its environs, Kisumu, Mombasa and Nakuru.”

Heightened vigilance

The association advised schools to exercise heightened vigilance of the planned protests, urging that schools remain closed and reopen on Tuesday.

“Schools in major cities may consider closing their operations tomorrow as a precaution due to the anticipated demonstrations and resume normal operations on Tuesday, 8/07/2025,” Eteye stated.

“For those who wish to operate should ensure close monitoring of the environment they operate in. Consider establishing contacts with your area police station or community policing unit for support should the need arise.”

Proper communication

She equally urged the schools that choose to remain open to ensure proper communication with the parents and guardians on the safety measures to safeguard the learners.

Additionally, KPSA urged schools to minimise outdoor activities that may expose the learners to risks occasioned by the planned protests

“Consider rescheduling all outdoor activities that could pose a potential risk to learners and staff. Schools to quickly appraise staff on emergency protocols like communication strategies, lockdown measures and evacuation procedures,” Eteye urged.

The government has reiterated that Monday, July 7, 2025, is not a public holiday, and that all civil servants should report to their work stations without fail.

However, the police have notified those planning to protest to steer clear of government installations and avoid confrontation with police officers during the demos.
