The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has called for urgent action to restore functionality in Kiambu County’s health facilities, as the doctors’ strike entered its 138th day.

In a statement on Monday, October 13, 2025, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah condemned what he described as unsafe, exploitative, and abusive working conditions endured by doctors for more than four months.

“KMPDU calls for immediate action to restore safety, transparency, and functionality in Kiambu’s health facilities.”

Furthermore, he warned that the county’s health system has become increasingly hostile to both patients and medical professionals.

“Healthcare is not just a doctor’s issue; it is a public concern that touches every Kenyan. The conditions under which doctors work directly reflect the kind of care patients receive,” read the statement.

According to the SG, the situation in Kiambu’s health sector has reached alarming levels, characterized by what it termed as “supervised deaths, illegal medical fees, suppression of the media, persecution of health workers, and efforts to turn patients against their caregivers.”

“These injustices represent a total breakdown of professional ethics and human dignity in the county’s healthcare system,” the statement read.

The union urged the County Government of Kiambu to prioritize the welfare of both patients and healthcare providers by ensuring fair working conditions, adequate medical supplies, and transparent management of public hospitals.

KMPDU further warned that without immediate reforms, the continued deterioration of the county’s health infrastructure would endanger more lives and erode public trust in the healthcare system.

“The lives of doctors and patients alike depend on urgent accountability and lasting reform,” the union said, emphasizing that restoring safety, transparency, and functionality in Kiambu’s health facilities is now a matter of public urgency.

Council of Governors

His remarks follow the Council of Governors’ (CoG) call for a consultative meeting to discuss the ongoing standoff between the Kiambu County Government and KMPDU.

In a letter addressed to the Kiambu County Executive Committee Member for Health, the CoG stated that the meeting will be held at its Delta Corner offices in Nairobi on October 13, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., with the aim of resolving the impasse that has paralyzed medical services in the county for over four months.

The council noted it had reviewed the correspondence between the Ministry of Health and the county regarding the non-commencement of medical internships for the 2025/2026 cohort, which has exacerbated the healthcare crisis.
