Kitui Central MP: Opposition will name presidential candidate one year to election
Kitui Central Member of Parliament Makali Mulu has assured Kenyans that the United Opposition will field a presidential candidate one year before the general election, giving voters sufficient time to scrutinise the nominee.
Speaking in an Interview on Monday, October 13, 2025, Mulu emphasised that this timeline is meant to allow a transparent and well-structured process for selecting a candidate who can unify the opposition.

Addressing reports of clashes within the opposition, Mulu described the disagreements as normal and expected when multiple parties and leaders negotiate to form a broad-based team.
“There is push and pull because these individuals come from different political backgrounds,” Mulu said. “For them to agree, there must be give and take. This is normal in any coalition.”
He reassured the public that internal disagreements are part of the negotiation process and should not be seen as a sign of disunity.
“Kenyans should have no issues with this. As we approach the election, there will be a day when we announce the candidate, and all parties have committed to rally behind them,” Mulu added.

Mulu explained that forming a coalition involves careful planning, including aligning party manifestos, negotiating leadership roles, and considering public opinion.
“Each party has a manifesto, and we need to agree on which elements to include in a unified plan. Opinion polling is also being conducted across the country to gauge which candidate resonates most with Kenyans,” he said.

The MP emphasised that the candidate will be announced well ahead of the election, giving citizens ample time to evaluate their choice.
“We are not going to present a candidate three months to the election. Kenyans will have at least one year to understand the candidate’s history, their performance, and whether they can serve effectively as president,” Mulu said.
Mulu also noted that reports of tension between leaders, such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Fred Matiang’i, are part of normal coalition negotiations and not a cause for concern.
He assured the public that the opposition remains committed to unity and that the selection process will be transparent and inclusive.
