Kindiki urges Ruto to start looking for money after Kenya’s brilliant CHAN opener
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has urged President William Ruto to seek additional funding after Harambee Stars won their first group match against the DRC at the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
In a statement on August 3, 2025, Kindiki hailed the Kenyan players for securing three points in their first match against a dominant DRC side.
“Congratulations to Harambee Stars, gallant sons of Kenya. The entire nation is behind you, from the Indian Ocean shores to the Migingo Island deep in Lake Victoria, from Namanga to Moyale, we all say thank you for making us proud on our own soil,” Kindiki said.
Dig deeper into pocket
He went ahead to observe that Ruto may have to dig deeper into his pockets if the first match by Harambee Stars is anything to go by.

“Mheshimiwa Rais, each player has earned their one million shillings this afternoon, anza kupanga maneno ya hawa vijana wetu. From the look of things, itabidi ujipange vizuri boss,” Kindiki said.
(This afternoon, each player has earned a million shillings each; start organizing funds for these players, because from the look of things, you will have to be well-grounded.)
One million each
Harambee Stars players will receive Ksh1 million each on Monday, August 4, 2025, as a reward for their 1-0 victory over DR Congo in a CHAN 2024 opening match held on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

President William Ruto, who made a surprise visit to the players in the locker room after the match, announced the hefty bonus, instructing Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed to collect the funds on behalf of the team.
“Na si sasa kila mtu ako na milioni moja,” Ruto said to the visibly elated players. “Kesho asubuhi, Hussein, nipitie pale State House uchukue mali ya hawa vijana.”
The Head of State commended the team for their discipline and performance, singling out Austin Odhiambo, whose first-half strike sealed the win for Kenya.
“You did very well,” Ruto said. “Thank you Bwana Austin kwa kutupea bao la kipekee.”
