Kindiki reiterates govt stance on pursuing accountability after destructive protests
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has sounded a stern warning to the perpetrators of the Wednesday, June 25, 2025, protests, stating that the government will make an example of those involved in the mayhem that led to the death of 60 people and massive destruction of property in its wake.
Speaking on Friday, June 27, 2025, in Kanyagi, Kitui Rural Constituency, the DP said the government is determined to ensure that such acts of lawlessness are never repeated.
“On the happening of Wednesday, we will do everything within our means to make sure that such acts of violence and looting will never be repeated on Kenyan soil,” he told the gathering.
Limitations to freedom
The DP hit out at individuals who term the happenings of the protests a freedom of expression for their ignorance of the law.
He further stated that the call for accountability will be a multifaceted approach targeting also law enforcement officers found to have engaged in excesses towards civilians.
“Those telling us freedom is limitless should understand that one’s freedom to punch aimlessly in the air stops where my nose starts. I understand the constitution more than those making noise. If you have rights, there are also limitations,” he stated.
“We will make a lesson of accountability on what happened in Kenya. If there are cases of police who engaged in excesses, they will be dealt with, but we saw police being attacked and stations being burned down. We will also protect those officers against attacks. I want to assure you that yesterday was a low moment for our country. We will make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he stated.
Kindiki’s sentiments come after President William Ruto called on the security agencies to move in with speed and apprehend those responsible for the massive destruction of property during the protests.

Speaking during an event celebrating Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) on Friday, June 27, 2025, the president directed the law enforcement officers to conduct a speedy investigation into the incident and bring those culpable to book.
“I expect the IG of police and all relevant police agencies to conduct immediate, thorough, and speedy investigations; the perpetrators of this violence and looting must be identified and prosecuted to the full extent of the law swiftly and decisively,” he stated.
Law and order
While decrying the loss of lives and livelihoods witnessed during the protest, Ruto noted that Kenya would remain a country governed by the rule of law, adding that such acts of lawlessness would not be tolerated under his watch.
“Kenya is a country governed by the rule of law, and the government will not allow such acts to destroy lives and livelihoods,” he added.
