Kihika calls for tougher road safety measures after Elburgon tragedy

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has called on traffic police to enforce road safety regulations more diligently, following the fatal accident along the Njoro-Elburgon road in Nakuru County.
The accident, which occurred on Thursday night, May 8, 2025, at Arimi, involved a 14-seater matatu and a lorry, resulting in the deaths of 12 people.
In an official statement on Friday, May 9, 2025, Kihika expressed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and stressed the need for heightened road safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
“My sincere condolences to the families of the 12 lives lost in last night’s tragic accident involving a matatu and lorry at Arimi, along the Njoro-Elburgon road in Nakuru County,” Kihika consoled.
“I also call upon traffic police to enforce road safety regulations diligently.”

She further urged drivers to be cautious, follow traffic rules, maintain their vehicles, and be mindful of others on the road, emphasising that many accidents are preventable through responsible driving.
In addition, the governor called for collective efforts to reduce road accidents and offered prayers for strength and comfort to the grieving families.
“As we mourn with the affected families, I urge all drivers and motorists to exercise caution, observe traffic rules, maintain their vehicles, and look out for one another. Many of the accidents we witness can be prevented through responsible driving, she added.
“Together, we can work to reduce road accidents. May God grant strength and comfort to the bereaved families.”

On the other hand, Molo Member of Parliament Kuria Kimani, while expressing deep sorrow for the victims of Elburgon’s fatal accident, assured that he is working closely with the Officer in Charge of Station (OCS) to ensure the affected families receive the support they need during this difficult time.
“It is with deep sorrow that I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and the entire Molo community following the tragic accident involving a matatu and a lorry at Arimi, Elburgon Ward. This heartbreaking event has taken twelve innocent lives and caused immense pain to so many,” Kuria Kimani stated.
“I am in close communication with the Officer in Charge of Station (OCS) to ensure that the families affected receive the support they need during this incredibly difficult time.”

He also urged motorists and road users to prioritise road safety by remaining vigilant and responsible, warning that speeding, reckless driving, and ignoring traffic rules can lead to devastating consequences.
“As we come together to grieve this profound loss, I want to emphasise the importance of safety on our roads. I urge all motorists and road users to remain vigilant and responsible. Speeding, reckless driving, and neglecting traffic rules can have devastating consequences, and we must all commit to prioritising the safety of ourselves and others,” he added.
