Kericho County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Agriculture, Magerer Langat, has resigned ahead of impeachment hearings scheduled against him and five other CECs starting Monday, September 29, 2025.

Speaking during a press briefing on Sunday, September 28, 2025, Langat said he could not take part in what he described as a “predetermined and unfair process.”

He claimed the select committee investigating him lacked impartiality and denied him adequate time and access to evidence to mount a proper defence.

“The selection of the committee appears deliberately structured to guarantee a specific outcome. This denies me the right to an impartial process as envisaged under Article 27 and Article 50 of the Constitution. In a house of 47 MCAs, what is so special about accusers sitting as investigators?” he asked.

Political tensions escalate

Langat further claimed that the impeachment motion was politically motivated and tied to succession battles ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“It is evident that the motion is driven by malice, political vendetta, and retaliation for my past stand in support of Erick Mutai during his failed impeachment. This undermines the Assembly’s oversight role and turns it into a tool for settling political scores,” he said.

Earlier, a section of Kericho MCAs claimed that the governor had spent millions of shillings to secure his survival in the Senate for the second time.

Six members of Governor Mutai’s cabinet had been scheduled to appear before County Assembly select committees on September 29 and 30, 2025, to respond to charges filed through separate motions tabled by different MCAs last week.

The looming impeachment of six out of ten cabinet members highlights deep divisions in Kericho politics, where clashes between the Executive and Assembly have repeatedly disrupted governance. Observers warn that the wave of impeachment motions could weaken service delivery as political rivalries take centre stage.

Langat’s resignation marks the latest twist in the escalating standoff between Governor Mutai’s administration and the County Assembly, coming barely a month after the governor narrowly survived a second ouster attempt in the Senate.
