President William Ruto has urged leaders in Kenya, from the Member of County Assembly (MCA) level to the presidency, to put seriousness in their work in order for the country to follow the right path of development like China.

Speaking during the launch of the Nairobi International Trade Fair on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the Head of State said that what Kenya has needed most is good leadership and nothing more.

Ruto has cited South Korea as an example, recalling that in the 1980s the Asian nation had been at the same economic level as Kenya, but today it has risen among the most advanced economies in the world.

Call for bold leadership

He has argued that the single factor behind that transformation has been visionary leadership that has prioritised innovation and discipline in governance.

“The difference between the countries that have succeeded and those that were with Kenya a few years ago, like South Korea, has been good leadership. It is we, the leaders, who have had to make decisions that move Kenya in the right direction,” Ruto has said.

The President has stressed that Kenya cannot afford complacency or mediocrity at this stage in its development.

He has challenged leaders across all levels of government to abandon routine thinking and embrace bold, innovative, and creative policies that can change lives.

“I want to tell all Kenyan leaders from MCA to the president, it is time for Kenya to move to the next level, and we must play our game.

“We must stop working with the ordinary, stop making peace with mediocrity, and work with bold, innovative, and creative ideas. That is what our country has deserved at this point in time,” he has added.

Vision beyond ordinary politics

Ruto has insisted that Kenya has had the resources, the people, and the opportunities to rise, but only if those entrusted with leadership have risen above the politics of comfort and short-term gains.

He has maintained that this has been the right moment for the country to match global competitors by putting governance at the centre of development.

“Our nation has needed serious leadership, nothing more. That has been what will make us achieve our vision and ensure Kenya claims its rightful place among the leading nations,” Ruto has said.
