Kenya and South Sudan pledge to deepen trade ties, tackle barriers

Kenya and South Sudan have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral trade relations and jointly addressing persistent trade barriers in a bid to boost regional economic cooperation and integration.
This follows a consultative meeting held on Friday, August 1, 2025, between the South Sudan Ambassador to Kenya, Anthony Kon, and Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Trade, Dr. Regina Ombam, at the Trade Ministry offices in Teleposta Towers, Nairobi.
During the meeting, both sides agreed to work closely to resolve outstanding trade issues that continue to hamper the smooth flow of goods and services between the two neighbouring countries.
Trade and investment opportunities
PS Ombam emphasised Kenya’s readiness to collaborate with South Sudan to unlock new trade and investment opportunities, enhance cross-border commerce, and promote inclusive economic growth in the region.
“Kenya and South Sudan have committed to strengthen trade ties and jointly address the prevailing trade barriers to boost economic cooperation. The South Sudan Ambassador to Kenya Anthony Kon today called on the Principal Secretary for Trade Regina Ombam at her office in Teleposta Towers, Nairobi, to explore ways of promoting collaboration between the two countries,” a statement shared on the night of Friday, August 1, 2025, via the official X account of the State Department for Trade under the Ministry of Investments, Trade & Industry, confirmed.
“Both parties committed to solving outstanding issues to unlock new trade and investment opportunities, improve cross-border trade, and foster economic integration.”

South Sudan Chamber of Commerce
Ambassador Kon welcomed the dialogue and revealed that South Sudan is planning to establish a Chamber of Commerce in Kenya.
The chamber will be instrumental in linking South Sudanese businesses with Kenyan counterparts, thereby creating a platform for mutual growth and investment.
PS Ombam lauded the initiative, noting that it will be a valuable tool in deepening commercial ties and facilitating easier access to markets for traders in both countries.
“Ambassador Kon disclosed plans to establish a South Sudan Chamber of Commerce in Kenya to connect South Sudanese businesses with Kenyan businesses. PS Ombam welcomed the move, saying it will significantly strengthen trade and investment linkages between the two nations,” the statement read.
