Former State House spokesperson Kanze Dena has spoken about retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s gratuity, highlighting that he is currently using fewer vehicles than those given to his predecessors.

Kanze added that former Presidents Moi and Kibaki were allocated more vehicles, than what retired President Uhuru received.

She disclosed that the former President has been using only what was given to him on a transitional basis.

In addition, Kanze said that Uhuru was only allocated two Toyota Land Cruisers, one Mercedes Benz and one Range Rover for his personal use, and the vehicles were not new.

“Just a point to note, the late President Moi and late President Mwai Kibaki were allocated and maintained more than double the number of vehicles that have been allocated to the third retired president to ensure optimum run of his office,” Kanze noted.

Speaking during a press briefing, Kanze said the vehicles in use are not new and they are those Uhuru departed with from Kasarani after the handing-over ceremony in September 2022.

“What the government spokesperson did not clarify, is that the vehicles allocated to the former President for personal use were not new, they were part of his motorcade when he left Kasarani during the inauguration ceremony,” Kanze stated.

Kanze also highlighted how various vehicles were being put to use and the various allocations such as his security detail, to serve his office as well as one for Mama Ngina.

“I want to confirm that the former president was indeed allocated vehicles for his personal use; two Toyota Land cruisers, one Mercedes Benz and one Range Rover that is used by former first lady Mama Margaret Kenyatta.

“The four Toyota Prados that have been mentioned are used as follows: Three are used by a security detail that was given to the former president and one Toyota Prado is being used by the office, as well as one Subaru Forester,” Kanze added.

“It was agreed upon by the State House that the former president uses these vehicles on a transactional basis, as they begin the process of acquiring new vehicles as stipulated in the President Benefit Act.

“That is two new vehicles of the retired president’s choice, replaceable every 3 years, and each having an engine capacity not exceeding 3000CC,” she said.

During the press briefing, Kanze added that retired President Uhuru was given government fuel cards to fuel his cars, though State House blocked them since March 2023.

“There were fuel cards that were issued, and the cards were given as well as the maintenance but that has not been done since they have been blocked by StateHouse since March till to date,” Kanze added.

Kanze’s communication follows the recent announcement by government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura that former President Uhuru Kenyatta and other senior state officials were receiving good retirement benefits.

Mwaura’s announcement came after public discussions about the costs associated with benefits given to retired President Uhuru and senior officials.
