Kangema MP breaks silence after deadly Saba Saba clashes
Kangema Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kihungi Irungu has spoken out following the chaotic scenes that rocked the area during the Saba Saba protests, which left two people dead.
In his address on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the MP expressed concern over the violence that unfolded, blaming it on individuals ferried into Kangema to cause chaos. According to him, the situation escalated when local business owners, in an attempt to protect their premises, regrouped and forced the intruders to retreat toward the unguarded market, where they broke into several stalls.
“I want to thank the business community for Kangema; they regrouped immediately and protected their business. The area that was left exposed was this market because the market is a government entity; they pulled down the gate, they accessed the market, they broke the stalls, and they began burning,” the MP said.
He said that police officers intervened in a bid to restore order but were met with resistance as the group pelted them with stones. A confrontation ensued, but security forces eventually managed to clear the area.

However, the chaos did not end there. The MP said the group later regrouped and attempted to attack the local police station, prompting law enforcement officers to respond with excessive force. This altercation, he confirmed, resulted in the death of two individuals.
The legislator condemned what he described as a politically motivated attempt to destabilise peace in Kangema, saying some leaders were behind the mobilisation of youth to fuel the unrest. He criticised the move, stating that no political ambition should be pursued at the cost of innocent lives.
“I wish to call upon the politicians to let them understand you will not rise to power stepping on the blood of our young people,” he added.
He also extended his condolences to the families affected by the incident and urged the authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring those responsible to justice.
