MPs from Ukambani have demanded an apology from Opposition leader Raila Odinga over remarks he made at a rally in Kibra on Sunday, saying the statement belittled the community.

The MPs threatened to lead a mass walk out from the National Super Alliance (Nasa) should Raila fail to apologise.

“We, the elected from the lower eastern region, are grossly annoyed by the reckless public profiling of our community by Raila Odinga,” said Kitui Central MP Makau Mulu at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday.

The MPs accused Raila of treating the community with contempt despite having backed him in the last two General Elections, as members of CORD and Nasa.

“The blanket profiling of the Kamba community in words that we find difficult to repeat must be seen for what it is, it betrays Raila’s contempt for our community,” the Kitui Central MP said.

Mr Mulu was accompanied by MPs Paul Musyimi (Mwingi North), Charles Nguna (Mwingi West), Gideon Mulyungi (Mwingi Central), David Mboni (Kitui Rural), Nimrod Mbai (Kitui East), Erastus Kivasu Nzioka (Mbooni), Thaddeus Nzambia (Kilome) and Jessica Mbalu (Kibwezi East).

The Wiper MPs also faulted Ukambani governors — Charity Ngilu (Kitui), Dr Alfred Mutua (Machakos) and Prof Kivutha Kibwan (Makueni) — for allegedly cheering on the ODM leader as he profiled the community.

“Raila has a right to choose the people he wants to work with from the lower Eastern region. In the meantime, we have unanimously donated the three governors from Ukambani to Raila,” said Kitui Senator Enock Wambua

On Kibra by-elections, Wambua claimed the three governors have no clout and their presence will not affect the outcome.

“They don’t speak for the community. They have never spoken for the community when Wiper was battling Raila’s candidate in Embakasi South.

“We appeal to our people in Kibra to maintain peace and vote wisely.”
