Kaluma warns Babu Owino to retrace his steps to Raila or risk political downfall

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has cautioned his Embakasi East counterpart Babu Owino against straying from Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, warning that his political future could be in jeopardy if he fails to retrace his steps.
In a statement directed at Babu on Sunday, September 7, 2025, Kaluma likened him to the mythical Icarus, who flew too close to the sun and fell to his death.
“Babu, like Icarus, you’re flying too close to the sun! Retrace your way back to Baba before it’s late,” Kaluma said.
He noted that forces opposed to Babu have consistently sought to undermine him by fielding rival candidates and petitioning the courts against his electoral victories in every contest.
“These guys have run a candidate against you and petitioned the courts to nullify your election in every contest. They’ll NEVER vote for you to be the Governor of Nairobi,” he added.

Babu Owino’s stance
His remarks come a few days after Babu stated that he has made peace with not getting an endorsement from his ODM Party to vie for Nairobi governor in 2027.
Speaking during a breakfast show at Kameme TV on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Owino stated that the body language of ODM Party leader Raila Odinga reveals that he has a preferred candidate for the position other than himself.

“I am sure I will not get the ODM ticket to vie for Nairobi Governor in 2027. Raila endorsed Sakaja in Bomas during the AUC prayer meeting, but I will respect Raila as my political godfather even though all my plans are in God’s hands,” he said.
Owino equally indicated that, despite being a loyal member of the party, he has been increasingly sidelined from the affairs of the party and that it was evident that his presence was no longer valued.
“When Sakaja was endorsed at Bomas and was rescued by Raila and Ruto recently, this was a sign that my presence in the party is no longer valued. However, there is still time to make things right,” Owino observed.
“Nobody has ever loved Raila like I did; I was among the first people to be detained by the Ruto administration for three days because of my belief in Raila, and I have suffered immensely during the demos,” he stated.
“That is not the character of a person who distances himself from a party but of one who associates with the party.”
