Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has come out strongly against the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing it of dictatorship and brutality following the arrest of civil rights activist Boniface Mwangi.

In a hard-hitting statement issued via social media on the night of Saturday, July 19, 2025, Kalonzo declared that he will not participate in any form of dialogue with what he termed a “rogue and criminal regime,” citing the deaths of protestors and the government’s continued repression of dissenting voices.

“I will NEVER join this rogue and criminal regime, and I refuse to participate in any type of dialogue with a regime that has our children’s blood on its hands,” Kalonzo stated.

He further condemned the arrest of Boniface Mwangi, describing him as a bold and fearless advocate for truth and justice.

“I also strongly condemn the arrest of civil rights activist @bonifacemwangi, a bold and fearless advocate for truth and justice. I have directed our legal team to do everything they can to ensure his release at the earliest time possible,” he stated.

Silencing criticism

Kalonzo accused President William Ruto’s government of weaponising fear and violence to silence criticism.

“Make no mistake: the Ruto dictatorship is not interested in peace. It feeds on fear, violence, and intimidation,” he said.

The former vice president affirmed that Kenyans will not be silenced.

“We shall not remain silent nor be silenced. The spirit of resistance is alive,” he concluded.

Mwangi’s arrest has sparked widespread condemnation from civil society, legal professionals, and opposition leaders who argue that the government is eroding constitutional freedoms, particularly the right to peaceful protest.

Omtatah condemns Mwangi’s arrest

Busia County Senator and renowned constitutional defender and human rights activist Okiya Omtatah has also strongly condemned the arrest of the activist, terming it a blatant abuse of power and a violation of constitutional rights.

In a public statement issued via his official X account on the night of Saturday, July 19, 2025, Omtatah demanded the “immediate and unconditional release” of Mwangi, who was apprehended for peacefully expressing dissent.

The lawmaker described the arrest as a gross violation of Articles 33, 37, and 49 of Kenya’s Constitution, which respectively guarantee freedom of expression, the right to assembly and protest, and the rights of arrested persons.

“I demand the immediate and unconditional release of @bonifacemwangi. Arresting a Kenyan for peacefully expressing dissent is a gross abuse of power and a direct violation of Articles 33, 37, and 49 of the Constitution. The misuse of anti-terror laws to target activists is not only unlawful but dangerous,” Omtatah stated.
