Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has directly blamed the Kenya Kwanza administration for the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang, calling it a cruel execution and accusing the government of operating a state-backed killer squad.

Kalonzo made the remarks in a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, through his presidential secretariat.

Ojwang, who was arrested over a social media post, died hours after being detained at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.

His death, initially attributed by police to self-inflicted injuries, has since drawn national outrage following an independent postmortem that disputes the official version.

A brutal execution

In his statement, Kalonzo condemned the Kenya Kwanza regime, alleging that Ojwang was targeted for simply voicing his thoughts online.

“The cruel execution of Albert Ojwang because he dared voice his thoughts is the latest heinous example from the Kenya Kwanza regime, saying the right thing in daylight and doing the complete opposite in the dark cover of night,” Kalonzo stated.

He further demanded the immediate resignation of Deputy Inspector General Mr. Lagat, arguing that calls for investigation were “completely out of place” given what he termed a pattern of state-sanctioned repression.

Autopsy findings

Kalonzo’s remarks followed damning revelations by forensic pathologist Dr. Bernard Midia, who led a team of five experts in conducting Ojwang’s postmortem on Tuesday.

Speaking at Nairobi Funeral Home, Midia said the injuries on Ojwang’s body were consistent with a physical struggle and could not have been self-inflicted.

“When you combine all the injuries in the body, they are consistent with a struggle,” said Midia.

“The injuries were widespread across the body, including the head, back, and limbs. It is unlikely to be self-inflicted injury.”

This directly contradicts earlier police claims that Ojwang died after hitting his head against a cell wall.

Opposition demands justice

Kalonzo, speaking on behalf of the United Opposition, said they mourn with Ojwang’s family and vowed to honour his memory.

He warned the government against targeting online voices through intimidation and extrajudicial means.

“We also warn this regime about the intimidation of online influencers through a psychological warfare operation funded by the government,” he added.

He pledged to issue a comprehensive statement addressing broader issues, including recent arrests and clampdowns on digital expression, and called for urgent action to protect the freedom of speech.
