Kalonzo Musyoka says he nearly left politics to care for his ailing wife

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has admitted that he has considered quitting politics to take care of his ailing wife, Pauline, but remains committed to his political journey.
Speaking candidly in an interview with a local TV station on the night of Thursday, April 3, 2025, Kalonzo revealed that he has contemplated stepping away from politics multiple times. However, he says he knows his wife would not allow it because she is the vision carrier.
According to Kalonzo, Pauline understands his political journey and what he is meant to achieve, making quitting not an option.
“With a wife who has been unwell, it has occurred to me several times. I could just quit politics and look after my wife, but I know Pauline would not agree. She is a vision carrier; she knows where we have come from and what I am supposed to achieve, so I keep going; therefore, quitting is not an option,” Kalonzo explained.
The former vice president emphasised that his passion for public service keeps him going.
“I cannot quit because, for me, it is a calling to help and serve people. It gives me a lot of pleasure when I help a Kenyan each day out of some misery. Many do not even know that I am in the opposition; they just keep saying, ‘Watoto hawajaenda shule.’ We try to help them through the foundation, and if I quit, who will help these people? I still have the strength to keep going,” he added.

Kalonzo on Pauline’s health
Kalonzo also spoke about his wife’s health, acknowledging the immense support she has received from family, friends, and religious leaders.
“I know if I were in a similar situation, Pauline would have taken better care of me. I cannot do enough for Pauline to give her comfort and to wish her recovery, and a lot of people have been praying for her,” he stated.
He recalled moments of spiritual encouragement from a global religious leader and international gospel singer.
“One time, a bishop from Canterbury came here and prayed for her. Israel Mbonyi also came and played the guitar for her. I hold the view that one day she will stand and walk,” he added.

Kalonzo on political betrayal
He acknowledged the betrayal and trickery in Kenyan politics but remains focused on his political ambitions and vision despite the challenges he faces.
“Politics is full of betrayal, and in Kenya, there is a lot of trickery. But I do not take it to heart. I know people are struggling for space and want to achieve certain visions. I have my own vision to serve and lead this country, and I think that time has come,” he affirmed.
Kalonzo has been positioning himself as a key player in Kenya’s political landscape, with eyes set on the presidency.
