Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka accused the state of attempting to intimidate and silence perceived dissidents of the government by preferring fabricated charges against them.

In a statement shared via his X page on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, after appearing for the hearings of Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, Peter Wawanjiru and Serah Wanjiku Thiga at the Kahawa Law Court, the opposition leader termed the charges against them as trumped up.

He expressed his dismay with the terrorism charges laid against them.

Terrorism charges

“Today, I’m at Kahawa Law Court to stand in defence of the Manyatta MP, Hon. Gitonga Mukunji, as well as Peter Kinyanjui Wawanjiru and Serah Wanjiku Thiga, who now face outrageous terrorism charges. Astonishingly, Hon. Mukunji was arrested alongside an inooro tv journalist and the boda boda rider who ferried him,” his statement read.

The opposition figure promised to engage their legal brains to challenge the charges in the court of law.

“These are trumped-up accusations meant to intimidate and silence leaders who stand with the people. As I said yesterday at this courthouse, these tools of tyranny have an expiration date. We will fight this blatant abuse of power with the ultimate weapon: The Constitution of Kenya, 2010,” he stated.

His sentiment comes a day after the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) youth leader Peter Kinyanjui Wanjiru alias Kawanjiru was produced at the Kahawa Law Courts on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, after he was dramatically re-arrested.

Kawanjiru was arraigned together with Serah Wanjiku Thiga, who is also former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s ally, and 35 Gen-Z’s who participated in the recent protests.

The 37 protesters were expected to take a plea over charges of terrorism pressed on them by the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) before Principal Magistrate Gideon Kiage Oenga.

However, the defense team, led by Kalonzo, lawyer Kibe Mungai, and Ndengwa Njiru, challenged the prosecution’s decision to charge their clients with terrorist acts, citing that they were merely exercising their constitutional rights by demonstrating.

“It is not possible for the prosecution to charge people with terrorist acts and say no we have not called protesters terrorists,” lawyer Mungai stated.

The prosecution insisted that the protesters were eligible to plead to the terrorism charges.

The two ex-DP Gachagua allies were said to have committed a terrorist act which left Kikuyu probation offices, Kikuyu Law Courts, Kikuyu Sub-County offices, Kikuyu Chiefs’ office, among other government offices and buildings, seriously damaged on June 25, 2025, during Gen-Z protests.
