The Kalonzo Musyoka Foundation has donated food to over 200 artists in Mwingi to shield them from the Covid-19 pandemic as their livelihoods have been hit by the closure of entertainment joints and ban on public gatherings.

In an event that was held at the Mwingi Central MP’s residence at Kiseveni, the artists took home food items, sanitizers and face masks.

Speaking after distributing the foodstuffs, Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi said that the entertainment sector has been greatly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Wiper Party MP lauded Kalonzo’s foundation for the timely assistance and urged other locals leaders to remember artists when issuing food relief to their residents.

Mulyungi said that many artists rely on income from live performances in large public gatherings hence their vulnerability during this Covid-19 pandemic.

Last month, the Ministry of Sports, Culture, and Heritage launched the “Work for Pay” Sh100 million stimulus package for artists, actors, and musicians at the Kenya Cultural Centre.

This followed an Executive Order by President Uhuru Kenyatta in April directing the Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund to provide Sh100 million to cushion workers in the creative industry.
