Kalonzo announces date he will lead a delegation to Bondo to honour Raila

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced plans to lead a delegation to Bondo to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who was laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in a solemn and symbolic ceremony that brought together national leaders, family, and several mourners allowed at the private ceremony.

Speaking during the Ngemi Cia Watho Association Festival in Gatanga Constituency, Murang’a County, on Saturday night, November 1, 2025, Kalonzo asked the Mt Kenya leaders and Raila supporters to join his entourage to Bondo to honour the late former prime minister on Thursday, November 7, 2025.

The former vice president heaped praise on the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, stating that he played a critical role in helping the country adopt its 2010 constitution.

He thus challenged the leaders to join him in style, honouring Raila’s legacy of constitutionalism.

“I welcome you to join me on Thursday, and we go and shout Jowi. Those of you who are able, actually, let us go to Bondo next Thursday in a style like no other,” Kalonzo stated.

“Because there is no way William Ruto and his ilk can pretend to mourn Raila Odinga. Those of us who feel that have a true inheritance to the Constitution 2010, let us also go to Bondo,” he insisted.

However, Kalonzo did not immediately reveal if the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, would join his delegation to Bondo. Gachagua was a no-show at the state funeral of the late former prime minister, but speculation emerged that he was planning to visit Odinga’s family and offer his condolences.

Decries being sidelined

Kalonzo was among the opposition leaders who decried being sidelined during the state funeral of the late former prime minister Raila.

“It is unfortunate because it is a state funeral; they should have recognised the official opposition to say something. That is what Raila Odinga would have wanted,” Kalonzo said.

He added that even the announcement by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki acknowledging their presence was barely audible.

“You can see the way Kindiki announced that some of us were around; nobody could hear. But it is okay,” he said.

However, he was accorded a chance to speak in Bondo where he eulogised Raila as a fearless reformist and a force of nature who sacrificed for Kenya’s democratic freedoms.

He described Raila as a resilient brother and long-serving political detainee whose struggle for justice and the fight against corruption were immeasurable. Kalonzo pledged to continue the values Raila fought for, acknowledging that while Raila saw the promised land, others must now complete the journey on his behalf.
