Former Roots Party presidential running mate Justina Wamae has come out strongly to defend her political ambitions, dismissing suggestions that she lacks the qualities needed to be a serious presidential contender.

She questioned the basis of such sentiments, challenging critics to define the traits of a serious contender.

“When Kenyans say that Justina Wamae is not a serious Presidential Aspirant, what do they mean? What are the characteristics or traits of a SERIOUS Presidential aspirant?” she posed.

Wamae’s political journey

Wamae’s entry into politics began in 2017 when she vied for the Mavoko parliamentary seat as an independent candidate. Although she did not win, the experience introduced her to the national stage and laid the foundation for her political career.

Her big break came in 2022 when she was named George Wajackoyah’s running mate in the Roots Party ticket. Their campaign drew attention for its bold proposals, including the push to legalise cannabis for medicinal and economic purposes. Wamae became a familiar figure on the campaign trail, often wearing a scarf in Rastafarian colours to symbolise the party’s cause. Despite the symbolism, she clarified that she did not personally use cannabis.

She impressed many with her confident delivery during debates and media interviews, distinguishing herself from other candidates. However, tensions with Wajackoyah and the party leadership emerged after the election, leading to her resignation.

Wamae later described leaving the Roots Party as a decision that was both difficult and liberating, giving her the freedom to pursue her political path without party constraints.

In 2024, President William Ruto appointed her to a presidential task force on Human Resources for Health. She turned down the appointment, citing personal reasons, including being on maternity leave and concerns over her security at the time.

Wamae has since become a common figure embracing political commentary, using her social media platforms to challenge leaders, analyse policies, and urge Kenyans to take charge of their political future. She has been particularly vocal in encouraging young people, especially Generation Z, to go beyond street protests by registering as voters, participating in elections, and safeguarding the credibility of the electoral process.
