Jubilee appoints Matiang’i as 2027 presidential candidate for the party

The Jubilee Party has officially endorsed former Interior Cabinet Secretary  Fred Matiang’i as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, marking a major step in the party’s bid to reassert its influence in national politics.

The announcement was made by Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni on Thursday, October 30, 2025, following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the party’s headquarters and chaired by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“We have resolved that Matiang’i represents us at the United Opposition. On top of that, we have formally received his application to be the presidential candidate, and the NEC has approved and resolved that he now carries the flag of the Jubilee Party as the presidential candidate,” Kioni announced.

He added that Matiang’i would not only represent Jubilee within the broader opposition coalition but also serve as the face of the party going forward, especially in light of the limited public engagements by party leader Uhuru Kenyatta.

Also watch: Matiang’i says his association with Jubilee proves he is a consistent politician.

“Even as he goes into the United Opposition, he goes there in that capacity,  representing and deputising our party leader, and actually being the face of the party moving forward, given that our party leader is not always available,” Kioni said.

The endorsement signals Jubilee’s renewed efforts to reposition itself within the country’s political landscape after a period of dormancy following the 2022 elections.

The move also strengthens the party’s role in the United Opposition coalition, which is seeking to consolidate forces ahead of the next polls.

Matiang’i, who served in various key ministries, including Education, Interior, and ICT, has long been regarded as one of the most disciplined and results-orientated technocrats in government.

Matiang’i formally declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027, signalling a political comeback anchored on unity, service, and experience.

Speaking during a homecoming event at Gusii Stadium on May 2, 2025, Matiang’i said he is ready to work with like-minded leaders to confront the challenges facing the country.

He emphasised his readiness to serve, citing his decade-long record under former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.

“For ten years, I worked tirelessly for this country. I am known to be a good worker, and if given the chance, I am ready to work for Kenyans,” Matiang’i said.
