Safaricom customers have reported experiencing glitches with the company’s popular overdraft facility, Fuliza, after noticing that the service is not automatically deducting outstanding balances once money is received in their M-Pesa accounts.

Several users took to social media on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, to highlight the anomaly, with some joking that the system had temporarily “forgotten” to chew their dues.

Normally, Fuliza automatically recovers owed amounts whenever a customer’s M-Pesa account is credited.

In response, Safaricom acknowledged the disruption, confirming it was experiencing a technical issue.

“Hello Timothy, Sorry, we are experiencing a technical issue with the Fuliza Service; our team is working on resolving the same. Sorry for the inconvenience caused,” Safaricom said in a customer support response shared online.

The telco has not specified how widespread the issue is or when full normalcy will resume, but assured customers that its technical team is working to restore services.

Fuliza, launched in 2019, has grown into one of the most widely used mobile money overdraft products in Kenya, allowing millions of users to complete transactions even when they lack sufficient funds.

Fuliza Biashara

This announcement comes months after Safaricom unveiled enhanced credit solutions for businesses by expanding its offerings to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

The solution launched on May 21, 2025, allows businesses to access credit through an overdraft facility, Fuliza Biashara and a term loan, ‘Taasi Till’.

Taasi Till is a business credit offering short-term credit ranging between Kshs1,500 and Ksh250,000, depending on eligibility.

Through Fuliza Biashara, Lipa na M-PESA Merchants can draw multiple overdrafts from a minimum of Ksh1000 to Ksh400,000 based on their assigned limit.

For businesses using Pochi la Biashara, ‘Taasi Pochi’ offers credit ranging from Ksh1,000 to Ksh250,000.

“Businesses play a pivotal role in Kenya’s economy and make a significant impact in our communities. Leveraging the power of technology, Taasi will offer convenience and access to credit for MSMEs, allowing them to focus on scaling their businesses,” Dr Peter Ndegwa, Group CEO, Safaricom PLC said.
