In a scathing attack on Wednesday, Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny hit out at leaders from the Rift Valley region for not ‘protecting’ Mau Forest settlers from eviction.

Mr Kutuny singled out Deputy President William Ruto and the Senate’s Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen for censure.

“We shouldn’t blame the government for this. The Kalenjin community have got the Deputy President in government and we have the leader of Majority in the Senate,” said Kutuny during a press conference.

The MP accused the leaders of failing to address issues that matter the most to the people who elected them and chided the DP for allegedly spending ‘billions’ in donations “instead of helping our people.”

“Let the Deputy President come out openly and talk about the Mau issues. He cannot bury his head anymore,” said the Cherangany MP, who also accused the Cabinet of being mute over Mau evictions.

But on Tuesday, the Nakuru County Commissioner Erastus Mbui ordered the reopening of 15 schools within the Mau Complex following complaints eviction would disrupt their preparations for upcoming national examinations.

As the commissioner was making the announcement, the Deputy President waded into the emotive issue at a separate function giving a firm assurance that the education sector will not be disrupted.

Mbui’s superior, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner, said the eviction would be done humanely with a resettlement option being explored.

The second phase of the Mau eviction targets about 60,000 people.
